Planning & Development

In 2011, the Town of Cumberland adopted the Cumberland 2031 Plan, an update to the 2000 Comprehensive Plan.  This plan established a new land use vision "The Town of Cumberland embraces its historic and cultural resources as well as its National Road heritage to thrive as a viable town built on small town values and charm while providing quality of life amenities desired by young professionals, families, and active adults through multi-modal access, sustainable practices, and intergovernmental cooperation".  The Planning and Development Department strives to implement this vision through the implementation priorities identified in the 2031 Plan including, but not limited to ordinance amendments, special area plans, development of new policies, etc.

The Cumberland Planning & Development Department is responsible for:

  • Building Permits & Inspections
  • Current Planning
  • Long Range Planning
  • Corridor Redevelopment Planning
  • Code Enforcement

Cumberland is a two-county Town, with the portion of town in Marion County subject to Uni-gov.  Since the town is an included town, all planning and building projects for Marion County go through the City of Indianapolis.  The portion of the Town in Hancock County works through the Town.  If you are unsure which county your project is in, please call the Planning & Development Department at (317) 894-6202 for more information.
