Albert Bonge Lost Pocketbook Cumberland 6-10-1887 IN

I would like you to meet Albert Bonge & family.
I found a notice in the paper about a lost pocketbook.
I wondered who Mr Bonge was, so I dug into his family.

Albert is the son of Charles Julius and Catherine Waltz Bonge. He was born January 16, 1833 in Ohio. Both his parents were born in Germany and spoke German. In the 1850 census  Charles, Alberts father, listed his occupation as “Tavern Keeper.” Living with the family of six were three men listed as “Stage Driver.” In the same census Albert is listed as a “Farmer.”

Hannah Ulrey, Alberts first wife, was the oldest of 11 children born to Stephen and Elizabeth Ulrey.  Like Albert she was also born in Ohio. Her birth year was 1834. Hannah and Albert were married in Cumberland on December 10th of 1856.  Sadly this marriage only lasted eight years as Hannah died in 1864. Research did not reveal the cause of
her death.

Hanna is buried alone under a tree in the Cumberland Cemetery.

Albert had a GAR ribbon on in a picture that is in the Cumberland history book. There is a gap in his information but I do not have access to military records. My best guess is he did serve.

Albert married Margaret Jane Sanford on February 22nd 1866. He was still a farmer and she was a housewife. A housewife was listed as “Keeping House” on the census.

Margaret & Albert had five or six children together. Mrs. Olive Fish Hitzman, Mrs. Carolyn B. Redmyer, Mrs. Katheryn Landenberg, Mrs. Lillian Carr & Frank Bonges.

Margaret died of cancer on January 12th 1918.

In the 1920 census Albert is listed as living as a boarder in the home of  George & Verna Sylvester. He was 86 years old. On January26th, 1925 Albert died in his beloved Cumberland. His death certificate lists the main cause of death as Chronic Interstital Nephritis (Kidneys) with General Disability secondary.
