 What is a total solar eclipse?
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon aligns directly between the Sun and Earth, causing the Sun's face to be completely obscured. This celestial phenomenon will result in a gradual darkening of the sky, reminiscent of dawn or dusk. The atmospheric changes will commence around 1:50 p.m., reaching totality at 3:06 p.m. A total eclipse is a rare occurrence; the next opportunity to see a total solar eclipse in Cumberland won't happen until 2153 and will last only 58 seconds. When viewing a solar eclipse, never look directly at the sun without proper protection.
